Understanding Leaderboard Types - Differences and Game Options

Leaderboards are where the magic happens. This is where you setup exactly what group games and score tracking you want for your round or event. Whether it is simple stroke play, team scramble, match play, best ball or other forms of calculation, leaderboards is where all of this happens to dial in the result tracking you are looking for.

There are two distinct formats for leaderboards:

  1. Individual score - Where each player is playing their own ball and results will be calculated based on the individual scores entered - regardless of whether gross or net, by hole or by round, adjusting by hole sequence or par or even just by selecting which score(s) count on each hole.
  2. Team score - Where players are playing collectively for a single score and not recording their own individual score, as in a scramble or alternate shot format - regardless of whether gross or net.

Here is a breakdown of leaderboards for each format, as well as some possible games you can create within each leaderboard.

Individual Score Leaderboards (including roll-ups into Team scores)

  • Stroke Play (Individual) - Gross or Net, can also create limits on which holes count by par or by hole numbers
    • VIDEO: Leaderboards - Gross and Net Individual Player
    • Traditional stroke play scoring - gross or net
    • Par 3 Challenge - change Score Type from All Holes to exclude all par holes except Par 3's (same methodology applies for only counting Par 4's or Par 5's)
  • Stableford (Individual) - Gross or Net
    • VIDEO: Leaderboards - Stableford Individual
    • With a quota (typically used in Gross with a Base of 36)
    • Without a quota (typically used in Net)
    • Customize your Stableford points
    • Tilt - Gross or Net (Stableford game where a birdie (gross or net depending on setting) triggers TILT, and points on the next hole double. Another birdie and the next hole points double again. This continues until player makes a par or worse. This game is best when negative points are also at stake.) VIDEO: Leaderboards - Stableford Individual: TILT
    • Birdie or Better - set Stableford points for 1 point for all hole scores of birdie or better and 0 for par or worse to create a leaderboard that calculates all birdies or better (gross or net)
  • Team (Best Ball) - Gross or Net, Stroke play or Stableford, by Hole or Round
    • VIDEO: Leaderboards - Team Best Ball
    • Select the number of low and / or high scores to count per hole or round
    • Can adjust scores to count by hole par or hole number
    • Can add scores together or set to multiply together
    • Can select By Position (i.e. count 2nd best score per hole on team)
    • Can apply + or - bonues depending on all team scores (all birdies, all pars, all bogeys or worse)
    • Can exclude certain team scores - by worst score or by par holes
  • Skins - Gross or Net, Individual or Team
    • VIDEO: Leaderboards - Skins (Gross/Net/Hybrid)
    • Can establish a score limit to win a skin
    • Net Skins - can set max handicap limits, a 20 handicap limit, whether to allow strokes on par 3's, wheel off lowest handicap player in field or everyone plays off of zero
    • Hybrid Skins (Gross Trumps Net) - Set as Net Skins, but can establish a certain score threshhold where if a gross and net score tie, the gross score gets the win
    • Can play carryovers
    • Can require validation on next hole score
    • Set a per player buy-in or a fixed amount of per hole skin amount (if you have a pool of dollars allocated towards the skins pot, you need to convert this to a per player amount for proper calculation)
  • Ball Select - Gross or Net
    • Ability to select X of gross or net scores to be counted over round
    • Ability to require minimum and maximum number of gross or net scores to be counted by hole
    • Designated by player selection of scores to count before or after the hole is played (this is not optimized for best score as in a Team Best Ball format)
    • Yellow / Pink Ball - player playing the designated color ball must count that score (additional scores may also be required by hole)
    • Player designated hole - Players choose in advance or are pre-defined that their score must count on a hole regardless of if it is the best score
    • 40-ball (or 20-ball) - Pre-determined number of scores that must count in the round, and players must select which scores to count at the completion of each hole prior to teeing off on the next hole, and you are not allowed to go back and make edits to the ball selection after starting the next hole
  • Winner / Trash - can be used for all types of Trash games
    • Most common games are Closest To Pin, Greenie Long Drive, Longest Putt
    • Winners for each Trash contest must be manually entered at Set Leaderboard Winner(s) tab in the Event / Round home page prior to Finalizing results
  • Hole Score - Gross or Net
    • Deuce Pot - calculate all 2's made during the round or event
  • Match Play (Create Matches) - Gross or Net, Individual or Team
    • Set up points won for match play at overall match level and / or individual hole level
    • Always used in Ryder Cup but can also be used in normal event play outside of Ryder Cup
    • Can wheel off lowest player in match
    • For Team, can establish number of gross and / or net scores to count per hole
  • Match Play (Field Matches) - Gross or Net , Individual or Team
    • Everyone versus everyone (team or individual)
    • If playing as individuals, all individuals need to be created as their own team
    • Field matches sets each team vs team
    • Establish number of gross and / or net scores to count by hole or round
    • Set up point value to win a hole or match
    • Set up a dollar value per point to calculate winning / losing $
  • Eclectic - Gross or Net, Individual or Team
    • Can only be used in multi-round events played on the same course
    • Also frequently known as a Ringer Board
    • Identifies the best score per hole across multiple rounds to calculate a best overall score for a player or team across all rounds by hole
  • Combination - Create a combination of 2 or more leaderboards to be added together

    • Creating a specific leaderboard for each format and then building a combination board to add the two formats together
    • Must have the same teams across formats
  • Pick A Pro - Gross or Net, Individual or Team
    • Create a combined score event that uses a player or team score combination in conjunction with a selected Professional Player(s) from a current professional golf tournament (by round or event)
